During their voluntary orientation for veterans this past Tuesday (April17th), the Jacksonville Jaguars noticed that one vet was noticeably absent. The vet in question turned out to be  All-Pro running back Maurice Jones-Drew who skipped the opening day of the team’s voluntary meeting for veterans in what appears to be a contract dispute.

Currently, Jones-Drew is scheduled to make $4.45 million this season, which is a considerably lower number than fellow league running backs Chris Johnson, Arian Foster and Marshawn Lynch.

Johnson is getting $13.5 million annually. Foster is making $8.7 million a year. And Lynch is earning $7.75 annually

Speaking on the holdout, Jacksonville’s new head coach Mike Mularkey had the following to say:

“It would’ve been nice to have Maurice Jones-Drew here,” new coach Mike Mularkey said. “I can’t ask any of them to be here. We want them to be here … just to kind of get a feel for how we are, what they can expect from us and he just was one of the no-shows.” -Source

Jones-Drew had a career year last year which saw end as the NFL’s leading rusher, gaining 1,606 yards, which helped him  make his third consecutive Pro Bowl. He currently has two years remaining on a five-year deal worth $31 million that he signed back in 2009. The deal included $17.5 million guaranteed.
